In theory Mason is the perfect backup. I preface it this way because we’ve seen all year that we’ve had inconsistent performances from WHOEVER the backup 5 is because it’s a difficult role to play. It’s truly contingent on Malik Monk having a good game at least offensively because that’s how Metu and Holmes get going which is being a lob threat. Defensively it’s another story. But most fans look at Box Score stats and for the most part the back up 5s perceived value on a game to game basis is correlated with Monk’s game to game success off the bench.
