Game 5 of the 1997 Eastern Conference Semi-Finals between the Miami HEAT and New York Knicks featured one of the most consequential moments in HEAT History – the on-court scuffle that started between Charlie Ward and P.J. Brown during a pair of free throws and ended in the suspension of multiple Knicks & HEAT players.
(For the Knicks: Patrick Ewing, Allen Houston and Charlie Ward were suspended for Game 6 of the series, while Larry Johnson, and John Starks were suspended through a potential game 7. For the HEAT: P.J. Brown was suspended for two games through Game 7).
The HEAT went on to avoid elimination in two straight games to force a Game 7 back at the Miami Arena, where Tim Hardaway would put his stamp on the series by delivering a historic 38-point performance, adding seven assists, five steals, and shooting 60% from three (6-10 3PT) in a 101-90 win to help Miami advance to the 1997 Eastern Conference Finals.
